To me, one of the best parts of being on the slopes is, that joyful moment when you kick off your ski’s to go for lunch. I love these endless lunches, high up in the mountains, preferably sitting outside in the winter sun. It may sound a bit crazy, but the level of cuisine and service on the slopes is definitely something I keep in mind, when deciding where to go for a ski trip. Don’t settle for uninspired, soulless, self-service restaurants. It takes away so much of that lovely, traditional ski-vibe. Make sure to enjoy it to the fullest and choose the ones, where they waiter your table in Tracht and serve delicious homemade dishes, mostly based on family recipes. That’s the way you want it to be. Agree? Check the ones on my list below, for sure they will give you that typical Austrian feeling!
Ischgl is a true hotspot, not only to ski but also for great cuisine. It hosts a lot of fine restaurants, mainly in the village centre. On the slopes there’s one I would like to point out to you. On the first floor of the Restaurant Alpenhaus ( Idalp ) you find the VIP-Lounge. Skip the ground floor ( self-service area ). The first floor, that’s where you want to be. Fire-place, wood, sheepskin felts and a tempting sundeck terrace. Here it’s all about lovely food, fine wines ( impressive collection of Haus Heinrich wines ) and great service. Because I think this is the number 1 dish everybody loves, I recommend ordering the Schnitzel with Preiselbeeren from Heimischen Kalb (domestic veal), delicious! The VIP-Lounge has this extra, unique feature: It’s the stunning view on the mountains and slopes. Breathtaking and for free!
At 2.020 meters above sea level, this is the spot to have a tasty traditional lunch. The proud owner and perfect host of the Dorfstadl is Buggi. He is quite something, runs his house in a way that is really worth mentioning. Host, cook and entertainer: Buggi is all in one. Be prepared for some alcohol. He loves to carry around a bottle of Schnaps to share a drink and a nice chat with his guests. Inside, the restaurant is beautifully decorated in this specific traditional Austrian style. The outside terrace has this amazing view on the slopes and mountains of Kühtai. My favorite dish is the ‘rich’ Kaiserschmarrn, but the burger and Tiroler Gröstl are definitely worth trying too.
The lovely Schalber Alm belongs to the 5 star Superior Wellness Hotel Schalber in the village centre of Serfaus. High up in the mountains, in the middle of the Serfaus ski resort, that’s where you find this restaurant. Again I recommend to skip the self-service part. The area with the waiters in Tracht, that’s where you want to sit down, grab a fine traditional bite and relax before hitting the slopes again. I always choose the tasty baked potato with sour cream, bacon and a green salad. Yummie!
If you’re thinking about planning a trip to Obertauern, this is where you should go for lunch. You can also stay at the Seekarhaus. The 4 star superior hotel, in the middle of the ski resort, offers a lot of great features. One of the best features though is the Seekarhaus Soufflé. A spectacular dish, nice fluffy dough with the taste of vanilla. Definitely a must eat!
If you are a fan of game, this is the place to be on the slopes of Fiss. The Frommes Alp restaurant has its own game park. They serve a nice variation of it. The dish you should definitely try is the deer steak with red cabbage and soft boiled potatoes. So good!
The warm and welcoming Rosi is without a doubt the most famous singing hostess of Kitzbühel. Together with her husband Fridel, she is the proud owner of Rosi’s Sonnbergstuben. A beautiful place high in the mountains of Kitzbühel, where you can book a stay in one of the lovely rooms and enjoy the homemade dishes of traditional Austrian cuisine. Fridel is known for his grill dishes, but Rosi’s Bauernente (duck) with red cabbage, bread dumplings and gravy is also recommended. But that’s not all. At Rosi’s Sonnbergstuben they know how to throw a great party. Their annual Schnitzel Party during the Hahnenkamm race in January is fully booked weeks prior to the event and their glamorous Almrausch Party in summer, is definitely a must visit event for Dirndl and Lederhosen Tracht lovers. This party goes on till the crack of dawn. If you’re planning to ski in Kitzbühel this season, you should definitely stop by at Rosi’s and enjoy her Sonnbergstuben to the fullest!
Which one is your favorite on the slopes? Would love to hear about it!
