The Stanglwirt makes my heart beat a little bit faster. Why? For me it’s about details, they always represent the level of hospitality. Here it all starts when you send them an email: email@example.com. Daheim means Home. I like that a lot!
So much more than a Hotel
The first thing that comes to my mind is, whether the word ‘hotel’ does justice to this remarkable place. Of course it offers all the features you may expect from a luxurious 5-star hotel, but in my opinion this idyllic spot – at the foot of the Wilder Kaiser – can’t be summarized just as a hotel. It’s something more profound, like a way of life. Let me tell you a bit more about Stanglwirt. The history, what the family offers their guests and how they incorporate the gifts of nature into their beautiful home.
The Hauser Family
Like many hotels in Austria, Stanglwirt is family-run. Over 400 years many generations have lived at Stangl. Today, at the very heart of the family are Mr. Balthasar – innkeeper 17 in the long list of ancestors – and his wife Magdalena Hauser. Daughter Maria Magdalena is responsible for marketing & PR, Wellness & SPA and Shopping. The two younger Hauser children Elizabeth and Johannes have their main focus on various other tasks, the Lipizzaner Stud and their own organic farm.
Music, Farming, Bio & Wood
Like all family members, they have inherited the love for music from their highly musical grandmother Anna. Whenever there is any kind of a celebration at Stanglwirt, there is always music. The legendary Singers and Musicians meeting for example, is quite amazing. Musicians from all over the country come and stay at Stanglwirt to sing and play their tunes together. It made Stanglwirt famous across the entire Alpine region. This event has been happening here for more than half a century. You can say, that simple and authentic folk music has found a true home here.
The natural foods they serve are mostly produced on the more than 100 acres of Stanglwirt land and their famous mountain cheese matures here. But it’s not only about cheese, more than 80 tons of meat and meat products are processed in their own butcher’s. The daily fresh bread is baked in their own bakery.
Bio & Wood
Mr. Balthasar and his wife Magdalena show that there is nothing more natural than the combination of true comfort with a well-thought-through bio-logical foundation. Examples are an environmental-friendly heating system, that uses the rind waste of the surrounding saw mills and provides comfort and heat to the entire complex. For construction no common steel has been used for the ceilings, they are all supported by using beams of wood. The beds are positioned in such a way that electromagnetic fields don’t disturb the sleep of the guests and all the furniture is made from solid wood, you won’t find any fiber slabs. Good news for your body and feet; towels and bedding are only made from pure cotton or finest linen and of course the carpets are made from pure wool.
Stanglwirts’ 5 Star Features
Traditionally decorated Austrian rooms. Kamins (fireplaces) and pure solid wood. All there to give you that warm, cosy, ‘Daheim’ feeling.
Wellness. It’s all there. Just relax and enjoy it…
Stanglwirt has created a special world for their youngest guests. The Bio Children’s Farm is there to pet rabbits and goats, search for eggs and look after pony Susi. The children’s carpentry is also an attraction. Everything – all the tools and plenty of wood – is there to create a beautiful piece of art. And then there is the children’s kitchen, where they can turn the harvested products into tasty dishes. Of course swimming is part of the Stangl experience too. The in- and outdoor pools will definitely tempt them to paddle and splash around. On top of it all – and my personal favorite – there is a treehouse, close to the outdoor pool area!
The sporty ones amongst us can definitely eat their hearts out! In wintertime the perfectly groomed slopes of the Wilder Kaiser ski region are out there waiting for you. In summer you can enjoy various other sports like playing golf, running, tennis and fitness. With their own golf training centre, multiple in&outdoor tennis courts and a professional fitness garden you will definitely find a way to stay in shape.
And then I would like to mention this very special one. The holy grail for true horse lovers. The Lipizzaner Stud. Guests from all over the world come here to admire and ride Stanglwirt Lipizzaner horses. It all started with an auction. Winning ‘Pluto Verona’ at this auction, is one of the great successes of Mr. Balthasar’s life. Pluto Verona was not alone for long. He became the proud father of a fascinating breed, one of the few privately owned Austrian Lipizzaner breeds. Stanglwirt offers dressage courses for beginners, special dressage courses and jump dressage courses. You can even bring your own horse and book a private training. Of course horse boxes for guests are available at the premises.
Last but definitely not least, I love to share two ‘sort of’ Geheimtipps. The first one is for the ones that love great, traditional Austrian party’s and Wurst! Every year on the Friday of the Hahnenkamm Race, Stanglwirt celebrates the legendary Weisswurst Party along with 2,500 friends of the house, regulars, ski legends, numerous prominent guests and a great band. With the exclamation ‘Weisswurscht is!’ and the ringing of the 400 year old Stanglwirt bell, Balthasar Hauser opens the Party at 20.00 hrs. sharp. This event is the Bomb!
The other one is for you shop-a-holics. Stanglwirt has 3 in-house stores. The first one is a fashion concept store named Stangl. This one presents a wide range of well known luxury fashion brands and even has its own small fashion label with fine cashmere and casual cut items; of course exclusively available at the Stanglwirt. The other one is Sport-Eck, where you can get your high-end sportswear. Recently the’ve added one of my favorite brands – Goldberg Luxury Sportswear – to their collection. And then there is the Bauernladen (Farm shop). This traditional store is run by landlady Magdalena Hauser and offers all the tasty goodies. From Stanglwirt Alpine cheese and bacon to home-made jams, various herb and fruit Schnapps – made according to grandpa’s traditional recipe – and bread from the Stanglwirt bakery.
