Romantic hideaway overlooking the valley of Mittersill
It doesn’t happen everyday that I get to stay in a real castle that goes back to 1150. You can imagine how excited I was. We were heading there by car and saw it looming in the distance. This beautiful, white Schloss on top of the hill, overlooking the valley of Mittersill. It had been snowing the whole day and created this fairytale picture perfect! Two whole days we would be staying here. Couldn’t wait to experience the ‘castle life’ vibe within these walls, where so many guests already had stayed over the years.
Feeling royal at the Queen Juliana Honeymoon Suite
To our pleasant surprise we were booked in the Königin Juliana Hochzeitssuite, the wedding suite, where Queen Juliana of The Netherlands had spent her honeymoon. To us Dutch this was a nice detail. The suite was huge with historic décor, an original fireplace and a wooden ceiling from the year 1500. Historians praise the beautiful Venetian ceiling and find it unique that it has remained so well preserved. The bathroom is fully furnished to the luxury standards of today; underfloor heating, free standing bath, infrared cabin and a separate toilet. Both, from the suite and the bathroom you have a beautiful view on the mountains of Mittersill. The suite has this connecting door to the Schloss deluxe room, perfect if you want to stay at the castle with your family.
Spa with a view
Of course the Schloss Mittersill has a Wellness & Spa area. After check-in I was in for a swim and a visit to the sauna. They’ve really put a lot of effort in it, to make this place as comfy as possible. The outdoor pool, Finnish sauna and the relax room all offer a magnificent view of the valley.
Wine tasting & Dinner delights
After all the relaxation in the Spa we got ready for an exciting evening. We were invited to attend the wine tasting of winemakers Elke and Hannes from winery EHE Krauscher in the historic wine cellar of the castle. The proud owners – since 2009 the Schloss has been privately owned the first time – and a number of prominent residents from the village would also be present. Of course we accepted the invitation. I had read that the accompanying dishes would be prepared by chef Stefan Birnbacher and his team. Expectations were high, because I knew the chef had cooked at some leading spots in Europe, like Grand Hotel Park Gstaad, the Krallenhof and 2 star Michelin restaurant Steirereck in Vienna.
A castle with amazing stories from the past
It was lovely to be part of the wine tasting. Meeting the owners and the other invitees was wonderful. The hospitality was heartwarming and…dinner was great! We tasted all these dishes and heard a lot about the recipes and ingredients. Really love the fact that they only cook with ingredients from local Mittersill farmers. You can sense cooking is true passion at Schloss Mittersill. The other thing they are really passionate about is sharing the amazing stories, that are part of the history of the Schloss. I was dying to hear all about it.
Rooted in history.
Arrived in modern time.
Lived with heart.
The grand tour was led by Hotel Director Mrs. Stephanie Busch von Holtum, the perfect host to lead this tour. We went into one of the cellars, where witches were once imprisoned. Up the stairs, down the stairs, into the secret areas and hallways of the castle, while Stephanie passionately kept on telling one story to another. A remarkable one is the story about the most exclusive club in the world, the Sports and Shooting Club which was founded at Schloss Mittersill by Baron von Pantz right after the second World War and was a true magnet to the international Jet-Set. Coco Chanel, Clark Gable, the Duke of Windsor, Aristoteles Onassis, Aga Kahn, Henry Ford, Gina Lollobrigida, Bing Crosby and our very own Queen Juliana from The Netherlands, were all members to this club and they frequently stayed at the Schloss to eat, drink, party and hunt together.
The suites. Grandeur of the past combined with all the luxuries of today
In a way it’s exciting, knowing that the rich and famous of the world have stayed here. Luckily there is much preserved from the Sports- and Shooting Club period. The suites still have the grandeur of that specific period in time, but of course with all the luxuries of today. So, if you for example would like to stay in the Coco Chanel suite and feel that specific vibe, or want to have a look in the honeymoon suite of Queen Juliana, it’s all possible.

Leaving this wonderful hideaway with a head full of beautiful stories
We felt sorry we had to leave this lovely place behind, but glad to have come to know so much more about the history. A very inspiring stay!
