Great stay at The Hotel Oberforsthof
If you are planning a trip to Austria, this is the hotel to visit. In the summer of 2009 we went to the Oberforsthof in St. Johann Alpendorf, with our family and friends. I can be very brief about it. I would recommend it to everyone. The beautiful garden, the natural pool and especially the service and cuisine are magnificent. Children are more than welcome, that goes without saying. Austria is truly the number one holiday destination for families!
Hide and seek in the garden
The huge garden, is the perfect place to play hide and seek with the kids. They really enjoyed running into the garden after dinner at night and hide for us. This was by far the event of the day.
The pools. Dip into the one of your choice
Must sees when staying at The Oberforsthof
There are some really nice places nearby. Below you will find four sightseeing hotspots. The first one is the city of Salzburg. Definitely worth visiting. It is only a one hour drive to experience this beautiful city where Mozart was born. Walk around, have an nice cup of coffee at Café Tomaselli and shop at the beautiful Getreidegasse.
The 900 years old Burg Hohenwerfen
Hohenwerfen Castle (German: Burg Hohenwerfen) stands high above the Austrian town of Werfen in the Salzach valley, approximately 40 km (25 mi) south of Salzburg. The fortification is a “sister” of Hohensalzburg Castle both dated from the 11th century. Not only the kids will love to visit this Castle. Brilliantly, the castle was featured in ‘The Sound of Music’. It’s used as a backdrop during the classic ‘Do-Re-Mi’ scene.
The Liechtensteinklamm. Step it up!
In the heart of the Salzburger Land, very close to the hotel you will find not only one of the most beautiful, but also one of the longest and deepest gorges in the Alps. When we were there in 2009, I was 7 month pregnant with my third child. There are a lot of steps to go up along the Klamm, but it is absolutely worth it. It is a beautiful track and the views are spectacular. A true must see and so very close to the hotel.
The Eisreisenwelt Werfen. The world’s largest ice cave
Last, but certainly not least. Even from far you can see the huge cave entrance: 20m wide and 18m high. From here you will be accompanied by guides in the interior of the mountain. The entire cave system extends over a total length of about 42 km, but only about 1 km is covered with ice. Get inspired by The Ice Palace, the castle of the ice giants, the veil of the ice queen and the naturally formed ice sculptures and shapes. Inside the cave – even during the summer months – there is an average temperature of about 0°C. The tour is approximately one hour, warm clothing is therefore recommended.
