The ice Q restaurant in Sölden! Never heard of it? That’s almost impossible. If you’ve seen the latest Bond film SPECTRE – like millions of us around the globe – you must have seen it. Not in its actual restaurant setting though, but as a futurist hospital where villain Christoph Waltz pursues his devilish plans. I had to see this cool spot with my own eyes and walk in 007’s footsteps. When I recently visited Sölden I took the opportunity to go there at 3.048m. above sea level. Let me tell you the 5 reasons why you should visit the ice Q too!
The way up
The way up, to the summit of Gaislachkogl at 3.048m is quite an experience in itself. You simply don’t know where to look, the landscape is overwhelming and so incredibly beautiful. I was all geared up in ski-suit, because I wanted to hit the slopes after my visit, but it’s pretty easy to get there if you don’t want to ski. Once you’re out of the ski lift you can easily walk up to the entrance of this futuristic hotspot.
#1. Breathtaking view over the mountain peaks of three different countries
Magical, as if you walk into a glamorous Hollywood movie set, that’s the feeling you get when you’re up here. Magnificent snow capped mountains, topped with a thick layer of the whitest snow. A sight that will definitely stay with you. It made me speechless and very void being in the midst of all this natural beauty.
#2. Great cuisine in a wonderful setting
The view is leading, you can tell by the way they’ve designed the interior. All tables are positioned in a setting to enjoy the perfect view. The menu is sophisticated and brimming with treats; haute cuisine pur sang. Here, you won’t find the usual Austrian suspect dishes. Although there is a delicious apple strudel for dessert! We had the turbot and the linguini as a main course, accompanied by a nice bottle of Rotes Tor Federspiel. The appetizer was an attractive looking little can, filled with delicate potato cream and topped with a layer of caviar. Mouth-watering delicious.
Nice to know: Proud host and sommelier Valentino Schwarz told me that taste buds respond differently at this height. To keep the balance in the dishes, the chef needs to adapt his recipes. It’s mainly about the seasoning, for example less salt is used.
#3. The PINO 3000 red wine; matured and exclusively available at the ice Q
If you’re a wine lover this is definitely your reason to visit the ice Q! The PINO 3000 is a wine rarity, only available here and at Das Central, the luxury 5 star hotel in the village of Sölden.
The story that comes with it, is a very nice one to share. Three top winemakers from three countries – Austria, South Tyrol and Germany – jointly created it, based on the idea and dream that Mrs. Angelika Falkner – proud owner of Hotel Das Central – had. They all share the passion for creating something really special and this Pinot Noir is quite special. Made of excellent materials and matured at 3.048m. above sea level on the Gaislachkogl, in noble oak barrels.
Patience is rewarded
The maturing process takes a little longer, due to the constant cool temperatures at high altitude. The PINO 3000 receives a significantly more fruity character, caused by the changing oxygen content and low atmospheric pressure. Lucky me I got to try it and guess what..I would love to drink it more often!
#4. Great starting point for a long, beautiful ski descent
Can you think of anything better than hop on you skis after a delightful lunch? The ice Q is the perfect starting point for a long and beautiful ski descent to the village of Sölden. On the way down, you will pass lovely traditional, Austrian spots to enjoy a hot chocolate, beer or relax a bit.
#5. Because HE was there too….
Okay, this may sound a bit childish, but frankly I don’t care. I find it incredibly cool to have been in the exact same place, where secret agent 007 spend some time. Valentino Schwarz from the ice Q told me, it was a very special experience to have Daniel Craig and the crew over as their guests. While shooting the scenes for SPECTRE the road to the Gaislachkogl was locked for days and no one was allowed to go up in ski lift.
Isn’t it amazing to know that the man who has seen and done it all and even has a licence to kill, was overwhelmed by this hotspot and the priceless view over the mountains?
