Glamorous Kitzbühel welcomes the bravest
Once a year the entire ski world goes to the picturesque and upscale ski resort Kitzbühel in Tyrol. For one week this charming village is packed with visitors from all over the world. Press, top notch ski athletes and many, many celebrities; Everyone has the ‘Hahnenkamm Fever‘. The best ski athletes in the world gather in Kitzbühel to celebrate the highlight of the World Cup calendar. The ‘Streif’ is regarded THE BOMB. The most legendary and spectacular ski slope in the world and asks the utmost of the skiers.
Mausefalle, Hausberg, Querfahrt; Definitely not for softies!
The Streif Hahnenkamm Rennen is only for the bravest amongst skiers. The Ivy league downhill racers, the true dare devils. Fierce, strong and determined to beat this legendary slope. Men like for example Hermann Maier ( the Herminator ), Bode Miller, Stefan Eberharter, Frans Klammer, Fritz Strobl and Didier Cuche, did it. Some of them even won the Streif. Austrian Frans Klammer won it 4 times and the King of the Streif is Swiss Didier Cuche; 5 times!
The start of the ”Streif” race course is at 1,665m. altitude, characterized by extremely difficult and steep terrain right from the starting gate with the first sections called ‘Startschuss’ and ‘Mausefalle’ (mousetrap).
Right from the start, racers require a great deal of courage and self-confidence to fully charge the course, launching off to jumps of 50m. to 80m. at the sharp edge into Mausefalle. The Compression following the Mausefalle has proved fatal for many, in the battle for the enormous pressure on the legs and body. Check out this cool trailer. Atomic presents Streif ‘One Hell of a ride’.
Austrian Frans Klammer. 4 x Champion.
Bode Miller. American skier. Highest rank nr.3. Obsessed with the Streif. There is nothing he wants more than winning this race. To him, winning the Streif is the holy grail. Only if you win this one, you deserve to be on the list of best skiers ever. He once said he would exchange his Olympic Gold medal to win The Streif.
Austrian Stephan Eberharter. 2 x Champion. It is said that he skied the Streif in the most perfect way ever.
Hermann Maier ‘ The Herminator’. 1 x Champion. A very inspiring story.
In August 2001 his career seemed to be over, after he had nearly been killed in a serious motorcycle accident. He survived the accident, but his career was feared for. The doctors thought they had to amputate his leg. Luckily it didn’t get that far. Maier’s rehabilitation took months. He missed the ski seasons 2001/2002 and 2002/2003 and he also had to miss the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. To the surprise of many, Maier returned in January 2003 back in the World Cup during the Super-G race in Adelboden. Even greater was the surprise when two weeks later, he won the legendary Streif Hahnenkamm of Kitzbühel.
Austrian Frans Strobl. 2 x Champion. He still holds the record for finishing the full Streif course in 1:51.58, an average speed of 66.4 mph (106.9 km/h), set in 1997.
Swiss Didier Cuche. ‘SpartaCuche’ or The King of Kitzbühel. 5 x Champion.
Party until the Crack of Dawn
It’s a tradition that – after the medal ceremony – the winner celebrates with all his fans, all night long. He even has to stand behind the bar to pour drinks for his fans. The party that follows after the race is huge and goes on until the crack of dawn. The apresski bars, streets and Stuben are fully packed with party people. Of course there are a lot of places to go to and have fun. I’ve picked two very special ones. Not easy to get tickets, but it’s not impossible.
Bio-Hotel Stanglwirt. Weisswurst Party
It all started with the Bavarian master butcher Toni Holnburger who invited the Austrian skier to taste his famous Bavarian white sausage at the master table in Hotel Stanglwirt. After a successful evening with friends, they decided to do it again. In the following years, more and more guests came over and finally they had to send invitations because everyone wanted to be part of this event.
Now great acts are committed, celebrity chef Alfons Beck supports the Hauser family and the Stanglwirt team while preparing more than 5,000 white sausages for the now around 2,000 guests, including personalities mainly from sports as well as entertainment, politics and economy.
Rosi’s Sonnbergstuben: Rosi’s Schnitzel Party
Amongst the most popular parties is Rosi’s Schnitzel Party in Rosi’s Sonnbergstuben at 1.200m. This Stuben is a real hotspot for those who like a good mix of celebrities and ‘normal’ guests. Rosi Schipflinger waits the tables herself and runs the place together with Fridel. Arnold Schwarzenegger has been a regular guest for many years now.
Kitzbühel is a very luxurious ski resort with a wide range of 5 star hotels and chalets, in and outside the village. I’ve selected an amazing chalet in Kirchberg, close to Kitzbühel and three high-end hotels with top notch service.
Kitz Boutique Chalet, high-end 5 star chalet
Hotel Tennerhof. Beautiful traditional details
Kempinski Hotel Das Tirol. Tasteful contemporary interior
Bio-Hotel Stanglwirt. Recently expanded Well-Being Adventure World – sustained and heated by the establishment’s very own Kaiser spring.
It’s always worth visiting Kitzbühel in winter or summer, but being there at THE Hahnenkamm Weekend will definitely make you feel the King or Queen of Kitzbühel!
